The 44th round of Geneva international negotiations is being held

The Acting Chair of Government of the A/R of Abkhazia, Vakhtang Kolbaia together with the Georgian delegation was in Geneva. The delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. David Dondua.

At the 44th round of internationally mediated Geneva Negotiations, the issues regarding the execution of justice on the murder of Archil Tatunashvili and fulfilment of all the provisions of the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008 were raised at the session.

The representatives of Georgia handed over the interim conclusion of Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau to co-chairmen and Geneva International Negotiators, which clearly demonstrates the fact of torture and murder of Archil Tatunashvili. Georgian representatives called on Russia for not impeding investigations ongoing about punishment of those responsible for murder of Giga Otkhozoria and Archil Tatunashvili in the occupied regions.

During the meeting special attention was paid to the failure of the Russian Federation on the August 12, 2008 ceasefire agreement. The Georgian delegation emphasized Georgia's necessity to implement concrete steps to implement this agreement by Moscow to ensure the gradual withdrawal of Russian forces illegally in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions and create international security mechanisms.

During the negotiations the security, human rights and humanitarian situation in the occupied territories of Georgia was discussed in detail. The special focus was paid to the militarization and illegal military exercises in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, as well as the steps taken by the Russian Federation for the actual annexation of the occupied territories of Georgia. Participants from Georgia expressed concern over the installation of barbed wire fences and other artificial barriers.

Considerable attention was paid to strengthening ethnic discrimination among Georgians in the occupied regions. The representatives of Georgian side assessed the continuation of ethnic cleansing of the indigenous population of the Abkhazian region for registration of foreigners and their fundamental rights, including the restriction of property rights. The concerns were also expressed in connection with the severe consequences of prohibition of education in Georgian language in Gali and Akhalgori districts.

Co-chairs and participants from the US and Georgia focused on one of the key issues of the Geneva International Discussions - the necessity of subjective negotiations on the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons and refugees. They emphasized the absence of political speculation from Russian side on this issue. However, representatives of the Russian Federation and its occupation regimes have again resorted to politicizing humanitarian issues and during the negotiations on this issue left the meeting.

The next 45th round of Geneva international negotiations will be held in October, 2018.
